Digging Into WordPress EBook contents

After a meaty introduction which gives first-time users a bit of background on the WordPress blog engine, how to set up a new WordPress installation. They also discuss how to use categories and tags for the best user experience.

The third chapter leads the reader through a detailed “autopsy” of a WordPress theme. The main parts which make up a theme each have their own section (the header, footer, pages, the loop and comments). This chapter introduces the content of the following chapters which analyse even more each aspect of a WordPress theme.

The fourth chapter entitled Theme design and development is the reason many people will buy the book as it shows you how to build a WordPress theme, using excellent code examples, and explaining the different WordPress functions. There is so much useful information in this chapter that it will take me several reads to wrap my head around it.
I liked how the authors discuss the different options available to a developer : when to use a plug-in vs the functions.php file, and which are the best plug-ins for the job.

The fifth chapter is about extending WordPress’ functionality with plugins and custom functions. The authors explain which strategy works best in a given situation, which is an invaluable insight from an experienced developer.

The next chapter is about RSS feeds, how to customize them, how to use Feedburner. It goes into much detail about every aspect of RSS integration with WordPress which is something I haven’t seen discussed anywhere else in so much detail.

The seventh chapter takes us through the much dreaded comments section. It makes sense to dedicate a whole chapter about comments as they are what bring a blog to life. You’ll learn how to style comments, how to customize the HTML output, separate comments and trackbacks, etc.

The eighth chapter covers the SEO aspect of WordPress. You’ll learn how to optimize your pages for best google search results, how to avoid duplicate content which can lead to bad rankings, how to monitor your success with analytics, permalinks and optimization.

And more…….

If you’re a web designer or developer with a working knowledge of HTML and CSS and a familiarity with WordPress and PHP, you can’t go wrong with “Digging into WordPress”. It will definitely take you to the next level. You are that closer to being a WordPress ninja.

Yes, The 400 pages of The book is written by Chris Coyier and Jeff Starr. And if you are want to read more and if you pre-ordered it, it will cost you $27 for the PDF (includes free lifetime updates) .
